What Is A Door Sensor And How Does It Work?

Door Sensor

A door sensor is the most important sensor in any alarm system, whenever someone enters your house, the door sensor gives you information about it. This sensor is made up of two parts which form a circuit. When someone opens the door, these two parts get separated and the circuit formed between them breaks, as soon as this circuit breaks, the door sensor will give a signal to the control panel to ring the alarm. The control panel immediately sends this information to the Central Monitoring Station (CMS). It is very easy to install the door sensor, no special equipment is required to install it.

Working Of A Door Sensor

Modern technology has come up with different types of door alarm sensors, most of them use reed switch technology and a magnet part. The reed switch and magnet part determine the opening and closing of the door.

Reed switches are used and relied upon by countless machines, from doorbells to laptops. When these two parts come close to each other, a circuit closes and an electric current flows. When these two parts move away from each other, the circuit breaks and the electric current stops flowing.

The door sensor comes with 2 parts – a reed switch and a magnet part. One part is mounted in the door frame and the other is parallel to it in the door itself. These two parts form a circuit when the door is closed, as soon as the door opens, the circuit breaks. When the circuit breaks, the sensor sends a signal to the control panel and the control panel immediately informs the CMS.

Installation

Installation of the door sensor can be done very easily: using a good adhesive or double-sided tape, one part has to be pasted on the door frame and the other parallel to it in the door. These two parts should be installed parallel to each other and the space between them should not be less than 1 cm and more than 3 cm. If these are not installed parallel to each other or if the space between them is too much then they will not be able to interact with each other and the reed switch and magnet parts will be unable to form a circuit.

Shop/Garage Door Sensor and Shutter Sensor

The garage sensor and shutter sensor also work in the same way as the door sensor. But these are designed for iron shutter doors, so those parts that are installed in the door are made of iron. It has 3 parts- the first one which is installed in the ground below, which is called the reed switch, the second part is installed in the shutter door parallel to the reed switch, which is called the magnet part, which goes up-down while closing and opening and its third part which is called PCB, is installed in the side wall nearby.

The sensor will send a signal to the control panel to sound the alarm and the control panel sends its information to the central monitoring station.

Use And Maintenance Of Door Sensor

You can install door sensors anywhere according to your requirements such as windows, cabins, wardrobes, etc. The door sensor can be configured according to your requirements, if you want whenever an unauthorized person opens your door, the alarm should ring or if you want whenever an unauthorized person enters your house, the alarm should not ring and we should only get the information, all this can be done according to your requirement.

Your alarm system is always connected to our central monitoring station so if any sensor has any problem our CMS operators take immediate action on them and the problem is fixed before you even know.

Now that you know the internal workings of the door sensor and how it works, it’s time to invest in the best door sensor with a home alarm system that can meet your security needs.
